
Storm in Dhankuta Causes Over NPR 2.5 Million in Damage; Power Outage Persists for 36 Hours in District Headquarters
March 18, Dhankuta – A severe storm has caused extensive damage to government offices, schools, private homes, and public infrastructures across Dhankuta, resulting in losses exceeding millions of Nepalese rupees.
According to the police, the storm that struck Monday night damaged houses, animal sheds, and public structures in various parts of the district.
DSP Gyan Prasad Mahto, spokesperson for Dhankuta Police, stated that the storm accompanied by rain has caused damage in multiple locations throughout the district.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the storm inflicted approximately NPR 2,550,000 worth of damage to government offices, an Ayurveda center, the government lawyer’s office, civil service buildings, and private homes and animal sheds, Mahto reported.
Specifically, damages amounting to NPR 1,550,000 were reported at the Ayurveda center and the government lawyer’s office. Schools suffered losses worth NPR 400,000, while private homes and animal shelters sustained damage valued at NPR 555,000, according to police records.
Power Outage Persists in Dhankuta District Headquarters
Following the storm on Monday night, partial restoration of electricity supply has occurred in some areas of Dhankuta. However, power remains fully interrupted in the district headquarters.
The Nepal Electricity Authority’s Dhankuta Distribution Center confirmed that electricity has been restored in areas such as Bhedetar, Hile, Pakhribas, and Mulghat.
Electricity supply has also resumed in the lower areas of Mahalaxmi Municipality. Nevertheless, due to the storm, several 33 kV transmission line poles fell in the Chathar Jorpati area, causing a blackout in Dhankuta town.
In the Nigaale area of Dhankuta Municipality, seven transmission poles were broken simultaneously, damaging the associated transformer installation.
Bijliprasad Yadav, head of the distribution center, stated that repair work is underway on the damaged structures and efforts continue to restore electricity in the district headquarters.
