March 19, Kathmandu – Despite securing a victory in the second leg, English club Tottenham Hotspur was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League round of 16 by Spain’s Atletico Madrid.
In the return leg held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Tottenham fought hard to claim a 3-2 win. However, they lost on aggregate 7-5, which ended their competition run.
For Tottenham, Randall Kolo Muani and Xavi Simons scored two goals, while Atletico’s goals came from Julian Alvarez and Deivid Hanke.
Tottenham, trailing 5-2 from the first leg, started the match strongly. On the 30th minute, Kolo Muani gave the home side the lead with a header.
Just two minutes into the second half, Alvarez equalized for Atletico Madrid, bringing the game back in their favor. Yet, at the 52nd minute, Simons scored an excellent goal to put Tottenham ahead again.
Throughout the match, Atletico goalkeeper Julian Musso delivered an outstanding performance, thwarting many of Tottenham’s chances. In the 75th minute, Hanke sealed a crucial lead for Atletico with a header.
In injury time, Simons converted a penalty for his second personal goal, but it was not enough to overturn the aggregate score.
Atletico Madrid is now set to face their Spanish rivals Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals.
