Arjun Narasingh KC Emphasizes Need for Clear Criteria in Parliamentary Party Leader Selection
Arjun Narasingh KC, a leader of the Nepali Congress, has stressed the importance of establishing clear and definitive criteria for selecting the parliamentary party leader. The Congress party has announced that the selection process for the parliamentary party leader will commence on Baisakh 2 (mid-April) and the election will be held by Baisakh 4. KC suggested that the leader should be chosen based on eligibility and fairness, and urged that delays should be avoided. (March 29, Kathmandu)
KC shared his views on this matter via his Facebook account. He stated, “It is natural for there to be discussions within the party and external interest regarding the selection of the parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress, the main opposition in the House of Representatives. However, it is essential to establish clear standards about ‘who’ and ‘what kind’ of leader is required.”
He added, “There have been voices claiming that my actions have caused delays, and personal sentiments and relationships among leaders have been publicly expressed. Both of these claims are false and misleading. I have expressed within the party and publicly that we should set criteria for consensus and strive for selection by unanimity as much as possible.”
KC further emphasized, “The position of parliamentary party leader is not just a title; it carries the responsibility to perform an effective opposition role. Therefore, there should be no delay, and mature, capable decisions must be made. If consensus cannot be reached, let’s immediately proceed with an election and not postpone any further.”
