The Pentagon has announced that John Fallon, US Navy Secretary, has separated from the Trump administration.
No reason has been provided for his departure, but a Pentagon spokesperson communicated via social media that the change is effective immediately.
Under Secretary of the Navy, Hong Cao, will serve as acting Navy Secretary, according to spokesperson Sean Parnell.
Before his appointment to the Navy Secretary role, Fallon had never served in the military and was a major donor to President Trump’s electoral campaign.
In recent months, numerous senior military officials leading the military within the Trump administration have resigned.
Reasons for Dismissal
Fallon is one of the most senior military leaders to leave the Trump administration in recent months. His departure occurred amid ongoing conflict between the US and Israel against Iran and obstructed passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pentagon spokesperson Parnell wrote, “On behalf of the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense, we thank Secretary Fallon for his service to this department and the US Navy. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
The Navy has not disclosed reasons for the dismissal. However, a few weeks ago, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the removal of Navy Chief of Staff Randy George from his position.
Recently, two other senior military officers have also been removed from their posts. Since assuming the defense secretary role, Hegseth has dismissed more than a dozen senior officials, including the head of Naval operations and the Air Force deputy chief.
The role of US Navy Secretary is primarily administrative and policy-focused. Responsibilities include overseeing recruitment, training, budgeting, logistics, construction, maintenance of naval vessels, and infrastructure. Although serving at the cabinet level, the Navy Secretary operates under the Defense Secretary.
Fallon was sworn in last March. As a major donor to the Trump campaign, he had been nominated for the post in 2024.
Last December, Fallon was present alongside President Trump when Trump announced the construction of a heavily armed ‘battleship’ bearing his name. Fallon supported this initiative, named the ‘Golden Fleet’ restructuring campaign.
Expert Opinions
Former US State Department Deputy Secretary Andrew Pike stated that President Trump intends to expand the country’s commercial and non-military vessel fleet.
He said, “Someone had to be held responsible for the lack of progress in this area. I believe approximately 30% of the reason for this decision is because of that.”
“Additionally, the individual set to replace Fallon is a familiar face within Trump’s circle of supporters. I think this is a routine replacement to bring in someone more preferred and trusted.”
Cao became Under Secretary in 2025 and has 25 years of experience working within the Navy.
In 2024, he ran for a US Senate seat in Virginia but was defeated by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.
During his campaign, he criticized concepts of diversity and inclusion within the military.
The recent leadership change in the Navy comes amid continued US enforcement of a blockade on Iranian ports while attempting to negotiate a ceasefire with Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, a major global shipping route used for most of the world’s oil supply, has seen skirmishes, with Iran reportedly seizing two vessels.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that President Trump is “satisfied” with the ongoing US blockade on Iranian ports and believes it has weakened Iran’s position.
However, Iran’s chief negotiator said on Wednesday that it is “impossible” to open the Strait of Hormuz due to serious ceasefire violations by the US and Israel.
