A man from California has been charged with an attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump following a security review in Washington.
31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen appeared in a Washington D.C. court on Monday, where he was also charged with two weapons-related offenses. He has not pleaded innocent.
According to prosecutors, Allen arrived at the security checkpoint for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner venue on Saturday carrying a semi-automatic handgun, a pump-action shotgun, and three knives.
During the attack at the hotel, a Secret Service agent was shot but officials report his injuries are not life-threatening.
If found guilty, Allen faces the possibility of life imprisonment.
What Happened in Court?
Wearing a blue jumpsuit and a name-tagged badge, Allen appeared calm in court.
The judge asked numerous questions to which he replied calmly with “Yes, sir” or “No, sir.”
He stated his age in court and that he holds a master’s degree.
Three U.S. marshals stood behind him, with another standing beside him. The case is being prosecuted by Janine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for Washington D.C.
Following gunfire on Saturday night, former President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, cabinet members, and other White House officials were swiftly evacuated from the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Hotel.
It was revealed that the suspect tried to rush past a security checkpoint located one floor above the attack scene.

On Monday, U.S. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated at a press conference, “A Secret Service agent was shot in the chest but was wearing a ballistic vest that saved his life.”
He added, “That courageous officer fired five shots at Allen. The shots did not hit him. Allen fell to the ground and was immediately arrested.”
Blanche estimated that Allen fired the shotgun at least once.
It remains unclear whether the suspect shot the Secret Service agent or if he was hit by crossfire from other law enforcement officers, but the agent has since returned from the hospital.
Allen studied at the renowned California Institute of Technology and attended prayer sessions at the United Reformed Church in Pasadena, Los Angeles area.
Federal election finance records indicate that in 2024 he donated $25 to the Democratic Party Political Action Committee supporting Kamala Harris.
At Monday’s press conference, Pirro said the suspect’s letter to family before the attack indicated an intent to eliminate high-ranking cabinet members.
Court documents state the accused wrote to relatives that “administration officials… are targets, prioritized from high to low rank.”
“If necessary, I am prepared to go beyond most here to reach the targets,” the documents allege he said.
Review of Presidential Security

Prosecutors have requested that Allen be held in custody and have suggested classifying the attempted assassination as an act of terrorism. Pirro has indicated that further charges may be filed.
Sources within law enforcement report that Allen has not cooperated with investigators.
While investigations into what would be the third assassination attempt on former President Trump continue, security officials are reviewing the presidential security protocols.
Many have questioned the effectiveness of exterior security at the Hilton Hotel in Washington. Some attendees reported not being asked for identification, and questions remain as to why the President, Vice President, and other top successors were gathered in the same location.
On Monday, Blanche stated that security agencies did not fail at the event location.
He explained that the gunman was located one floor above, and “there were hundreds of federal agents between him and the President.”
A senior White House official said that the Department of Homeland Security, led by the Secret Service, is responsible for protecting Trump as a high-ranking government official.
