Q&A Session Between CAN Chairman and National Sports Council Secretary on Association Renewal and Legal Compliance

During the annual general meeting of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), a question-and-answer session took place between Chairman Chatur Bahadur Chand and National Sports Council member secretary Ramcharitra Mehta regarding the association’s renewal and adherence to legal requirements. CAN has only completed its renewal up to Ashar 2082 (mid-July 2025) and has not processed any subsequent renewals. Allegations have also been made about the lack of transparency in the financial accounts of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). Furthermore, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has written a letter to the National Sports Council, stating that it did not cooperate with investigations related to a complaint lodged with the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

Viratnagar, 27 Baisakh (May 10). At the CAN annual general meeting that began on Sunday in Biratnagar, the association’s chairman and the National Sports Council’s member secretary engaged in a Q&A session addressing the issues of association renewal and legal compliance. Ramcharitra Mehta emphasized that everyone must focus on adhering to legal norms. He stated, “Rather than discussing who violated the law or who is stronger, all activities must conform to the law.”

It has been disclosed that the association has only renewed its registration up to Ashar 2082, with no renewals completed thereafter. Additionally, CAN has not demonstrated transparency in the financial audit of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The Ministry of Youth and Sports has sent a letter to the National Sports Council criticizing its lack of cooperation in investigations concerning a complaint filed with the CIAA. The required documents for renewal include the annual report, future plans, audit reports, and documents related to hosting national and international competitions. However, due to the absence of an annual general meeting, CAN has been unable to submit these necessary documents.

Chairman Chatur Bahadur Chand explained that the delay in holding the annual general meeting was due to the country’s prevailing circumstances and mentioned that CAN has informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the Rugby Association of Nepal (RAKHEP) about this matter. He asserted that CAN has been undertaking commendable work for cricket in Nepal. Outside the general assembly hall, CAN Secretary Paras Khadka conveyed that the delay in the annual general meeting was caused by technical and practical reasons.
