Former Zelensky Spokesperson Accuses Him of Prolonging War to Stay in Power

Julia Mendel, former spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has leveled serious accusations against him involving abuse of power, corruption, and coercively prolonging the war. In an exclusive interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, she revealed a stark contrast between Zelensky’s public image and the reality.

Mendel describes Zelensky as emotionally unstable and suspicious, traits that have been a significant obstacle on the path to peace. After missing two crucial opportunities to end the conflict in 2022, he adopted authoritarian tendencies—jailing critics or forcing them to the frontlines.

I am astonished. Having worked so closely with Zelensky, I never imagined I would sit down with someone and speak this candidly. You risk a great deal by exposing this truth. Therefore, I greatly respect your courage. You were actually President Zelensky’s official press secretary, weren’t you?

Yes, absolutely. From 2019 to 2021, I closely worked leading the President’s communications team.

How did you rise to such a prominent position?

After Zelensky was elected in 2019, there was an open competition for the Chief Press Secretary role. Out of about 4,000 applicants, I stood out and secured the position by demonstrating my abilities during the interview.

What is his personality like?

Zelensky is not the person people see in public. He is emotionally volatile, hysterical, capable of using people as tools, and skilled at acting. He presents realities very differently from the facts—there is much deceit and trickery.

Although millions continue to support him, in the current circumstances, his continuation of the war makes him an obstacle to peace. Many of his policies serve private gain and corruption, supported by Western countries.

Mendel accuses Zelensky of attempting peace seven times but achieving nothing beyond deception and lies. She alleges he has authoritarian traits, sending opponents to prison or forcibly to the frontlines, and is complicit in institutional corruption.

The war has devastated Ukraine’s population and economy. Out of 40 million people, over 10 million have become refugees. Foreign debt stands at 100 percent of the country’s GDP. Gulf countries and Europe spend vast sums on the conflict while ordinary citizens face shortages of food and essential goods.
