Tribhuvan University Moves to Extend Contract with CAN, Making Competition Approval Mandatory
Tribhuvan University has initiated the process to extend its contract with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) after discussions regarding the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground. The existing 25-year lease agreement with CAN expired in the month of Baisakh. Registrar Mahananda Chalise emphasized that any extension must be agreed upon by the university and accompanied by a submitted match schedule.
Following the expiration of the contract, Tribhuvan University had issued a notice requesting CAN to vacate the grounds. However, after Education and Sports Minister Sashmit Pokharel publicly announced that the contract with CAN would be extended, the university adopted a more flexible stance. According to Registrar Chalise, any future competition schedule must receive university approval before proceeding.
“Unless no other options exist, competitions can only be held with explicit permission from the university. CAN must first prepare the match schedule and submit it to the university for approval before any events take place,” he explained. “Academic activities at the university are prioritized over cricket.” The 25-year lease agreement with CAN for the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground officially ended in Baisakh. CAN has submitted an application to the Ministry of Education seeking contract renewal.
