24 Jestha, Kathmandu – Party workers of the National Independent Party (RASWPA) from Kalaiya Sub-metropolitan Municipality demonstrated at the party’s central office located in Bansthali.
Following disputes over the results of the party’s municipal convention elections, the workers staged a sit-in protest on Sunday demanding transparency.
According to the protesting workers, Umashankar Rauniyar secured 124 votes and was elected chairperson during the Kalaiya municipal convention.
The controversy began after a notification for conducting a reelection was issued even after the elected officials had taken the oath of office.
Protestors claim the reelection call was made on the basis that the Madhesh Province committee did not achieve a 50 plus 1 majority.
They allege that this decision contradicts the party’s constitution and democratic procedures, stating that holding a reelection after once declaring the results and the winners is unacceptable.
The workers also criticized that the election cancellation was announced through social media without any official letterhead or signatures, demanding clear responses and impartial decisions from the party leadership.
Additionally, they urged that the ongoing convention process must maintain transparency and adhere strictly to the party’s constitution.
