Christian Eriksen Collapses on Field During Friendly Match, Health Condition Stable
Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field during a friendly match against Ukraine. He regained consciousness quickly after the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted in his body activated. Following the incident, the match against Ukraine was postponed, and Eriksen’s health condition is currently stable.
May 25, Kathmandu – Experienced Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen suddenly lost consciousness during the international friendly match against Ukraine. According to the Danish Football Association, he was briefly unconscious but is now alert and in stable condition. The game, held on Sunday in Odense, was stopped in the 65th minute when the 34-year-old Eriksen collapsed. After medical treatment, he walked off the pitch on his own, and the match was subsequently suspended.
Danish team doctor Morten Boesen stated that the ICD device implanted in Eriksen’s body functioned as expected. Despite being briefly unconscious, he quickly regained awareness.
Eriksen had previously suffered a cardiac arrest during the Euro 2021 match against Finland, after which he was fitted with the ICD device. Thanks to this device, he successfully returned to professional football in 2022. Last season, while playing for VfL Wolfsburg, Eriksen appeared in 34 matches.
The match against Ukraine marked Eriksen’s 151st international appearance for Denmark. Denmark’s captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg said that everyone reacted swiftly, and the players and medical staff showed great courage. Just like in 2021, players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective circle around Eriksen to honor him during his treatment. Denmark’s head coach Brian Riemer confirmed that Eriksen is safe and that he has sent a message to the team players indicating his good health.
