Development of Luharekot Showcasing the History of the Dalit Community
2 Asar, Manma (Kalikot) – Luharekot, which reflects the history of the Dalit community, is undergoing development. With the local government advancing plans to develop Luharekot as a religious, historical, and tourist destination, its significance is increasing. Located in Khadachakra Municipality-1, Manma headquarters market of Kalikot, Luharekot is regarded as a symbol of the valor and courage of the historic Dalit community. The structure featuring a statue built on the main street of the headquarters plays an important role in preserving local history and culture, explained social activist Bale Bishwakarma.
“According to the Lohar community, the site’s authentic name is ‘Luharekot.’ Its historical identity must be preserved with respect,” he stated. Based on local oral history, genealogy, and folk beliefs, Luharekot holds a vital place in the history of the Khadachakra region, informed Laxiram Bishwakarma, a teacher at Panchadev Secondary School in Khadachakra Municipality-2. “The preservation, study, research, and promotion of this site are essential for future generations,” he added. “According to local oral traditions and genealogies passed down through generations within the Lohar community, Luharekot is not merely a geographic location but is recognized as a political, social, and cultural center of the Lohar community.”
The history of this location is linked with Shanti Luvar, regarded as the first ancestor of the Lohar community. According to local belief, Shanti Luvar was the founder of Luharekot and an early ruler of the area, Laxiram shared. “At that time, a large settlement of the Lohar community existed below Luharekot, in what is now the Manma market area. Local belief holds that the entire territory from the current statue square eastward to Luharekot was controlled by the Lohar community,” he elaborated. It is believed that the area surrounding the present district court and district coordination committee office was once an old Lohar settlement. The large and tall rock above this settlement is known as ‘Luharekot.’
According to locals, the state administration, judicial decisions, administrative meetings, and public concern discussions were conducted sitting on this very rock. For this reason, the site is considered the former center of governance. Currently, Khadachakra Municipality of Kalikot has built a statue symbolizing bravery to reflect the history of Luharekot, said Deputy Mayor Ganesh Bahadur Shahi.
