Australia Advances to FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage as Group Runner-Up

Australia secured a spot in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by finishing as the runner-up in their group. In a match held Friday morning at the San Francisco Bay Area stadium in the United States, Australia played to a goalless draw against Paraguay, ensuring their progression to the next round. Throughout the game, both teams created several scoring opportunities but were unable to convert any into goals.

From Group D, Australia advanced as the runner-up, while co-host nation USA leads the group with 6 points. Paraguay, which drew against Australia, still retains a chance to qualify for the knockout stage. Currently third in the group standings, Paraguay’s advancement depends on the results of other matches. They must rank among the top eight third-placed teams across all groups to advance further.

This marks the third time Australia has progressed to the knockout stage in their seven FIFA World Cup appearances. The team had previously advanced past the group stage in 2006 and 2022. In this group, the USA secured first place with 7 points, while Turkey was eliminated with 3 points.
