Senegal Strengthens Chances of Advancing to Knockout Stage with 5–0 Victory Over Iraq

Kathmandu, June 27 – In the context of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Senegal secured a commanding 5–0 win against Iraq. With this victory, Senegal has earned 3 points from 3 matches, placing them third in Group I and significantly enhancing their chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Additionally, the team has improved their goal difference, positioning themselves to be among the top eight teams. Their future now hinges on the results of the coming games.

Senegal took an early lead in the match’s fourth minute when Habib Diarra scored the opening goal, setting the tone for their victorious performance. No goals were scored for the next 51 minutes until Ismaila Sarr extended the lead with a goal in the 56th minute, making it 2–0. Pape Guèye further sealed the win by scoring twice more, in the 59th and 71st minutes. Finally, Elimane Ndiaye scored the fifth goal in the 82nd minute. This win marks Senegal as the first African team to score five goals in a single World Cup match.
