Radio Collar to Be Installed on ‘Dhurbe’ Elephant Following Mother and Son’s Death in Chitwan

Officials from Chitwan National Park have been searching for a wild elephant named ‘Dhurbe’ since last week. The search intensified after ‘Dhurbe’ allegedly attacked and caused the death of a mother and son in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-23, Belhatta, but the elephant has not yet been located, according to park authorities.

Since 2013 (2070 BS), approximately 30 people have died due to elephant attacks around the national park area. Park officials estimate that more than half of these fatalities have been caused specifically by the ‘Dhurbe’ elephant. Previous government-directed efforts and various initiatives to control ‘Dhurbe’ were unsuccessful.

However, this time the park is preparing to install a radio collar on ‘Dhurbe’ to help monitor and restrain the elephant.
