Monsoon in Nepal Displaces Nearly 450 Families Due to Floods and Landslides; Government Takes Necessary Measures

With the onset of the monsoon, nearly 450 families have been provided with temporary shelter through collaboration with local administrations, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. Authorities are actively monitoring the conditions of the displaced individuals. Heavy rainfall across various parts of the country over the weekend has led to at least nine locations where roads were completely blocked as of Monday morning, while in some areas roads are operating with partial lane restrictions.

The Nepal Police reported that since the beginning of the monsoon season on Ashad 5 (May 19), there have been 724 natural disaster incidents, resulting in 66 injuries. Officials from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology indicated that rainfall levels are expected to decrease in the next few days compared to the weekend, noting, “The likelihood of heavy rainfall has somewhat diminished.”

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 62 incidents in the past 24 hours involving floods, landslides, continuous rainfall, and snakebites, which resulted in 2 deaths and 15 injuries. The authority also disclosed that landslides occurred in 18 districts, floods in 3 districts, and continuous rainfall in 5 districts. Officials confirmed that the monsoon season began on Ashad 5 (May 19) this year.

Spokesperson Shanti Mahat stated that the government is providing assistance to displaced families in coordination with local governments. She said, “Our primary focus is on monitoring and ensuring their safety. We are working closely with the relevant local administrations and municipalities to relocate them to safe places and provide necessary support. Assistance including provisions of food supplies is being arranged.”
