Over 220,000 People Evacuated in France and Spain Due to Wildfires

Authorities in France have ordered approximately 60,000 people near the city of Bordeaux to evacuate. In total, more than 220,000 people have been displaced across France and Spain due to wildfires.
In the southwestern French regions of Gironde and Landes, around 200,000 people have been evacuated. French President Emmanuel Macron has deployed troops to assist in rescue operations.
Meanwhile, Spanish officials have warned that fires near Madrid have reached a level “beyond control capacity” of firefighters.
This situation arose after three wildfires west of the capital merged into a single large blaze.
The Spanish government has declared a national emergency, ordering 25,000 people to evacuate and instructing about 40,000 others to remain indoors.
‘Beyond Control Capacity’

Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the regional head near Madrid, described this as the worst wildfire in the area’s history. The region is experiencing “strong winds” fueled by high temperatures, persistent dry conditions, and intense flames.
Local emergency services report that the fire has spread across two municipalities approximately 50 kilometres from the capital.

“The wildfire is at its peak and is currently beyond firefighters’ capacity to control,” Carlos Novillo, head of emergency management for the Madrid regional government, told reporters.
“It is impossible to confront the fire head-on there, so defensive measures are being implemented rapidly,” he added.
High Tension in France
On Saturday morning in southwestern France, four towns near Bordeaux were evacuated as a precaution, affecting a combined population of about 58,400.
Wildfires in Gironde have burnt over 19,000 hectares of forest and destroyed around 80 homes.
Authorities have fully evacuated the Cap Ferret peninsula along the southwestern coast, a popular tourist destination where residents fled by boat to escape the flames.
Although its resident population is usually below 8,000 year-round, during the summer holidays this number can increase tenfold.

According to Marc Vermeulen, head of fire and rescue services, the current severe wildfire surpasses the devastating inferno of 2022. The fire spread rapidly overnight due to prolonged drought.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated, “We have never seen a fire of this magnitude.” He also reported about 50 firefighters have been injured.
President Macron described the situation in the country, especially in Gironde, as “very tense.”
Extreme Conditions Across Southern Europe
The European Union has deployed planes and helicopters to assist firefighters in Spain and France.
This support comes as much of Southern Europe battles ongoing heat and prolonged drought.
Europe is the fastest warming continent globally, with temperatures increasing at more than twice the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Hot and dry conditions leave vegetation with reduced moisture, making forests more prone to ignition and the rapid spread of fires.
Despite this, a spark is always required to ignite fire, generally caused by human activity, whether accidental or intentional. Extreme heat, dry vegetation, and strong winds intensify the flames and complicate containment efforts.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System, wildfires have burned more land area this year in Europe than the average annual area lost over the last two decades.
The European Environment Agency has highlighted that climate change has increased wildfire risk across Europe and identifies Southern Europe as the highest-risk region.
