CJPP Calls for Ensuring Protection of Children Amid Violence in the Terai Region

August 1, Kathmandu – Following violent incidents across various districts of the Terai region, the Child Rights Peace Zone National Campaign (CJPP) has urged immediate and effective measures to safeguard children’s rights. Expressing deep concern over the safety and protection of children, the campaign appealed to the government, political parties, and relevant stakeholders to take prompt action.

In a statement released on Thursday, CJPP expressed grief over the death of a teenager shot during clashes in Siraha. The statement highlighted the troubling presence of children on the frontlines during violent conflicts. Parents have been urged to keep children safely indoors and exercise heightened vigilance during curfews and prohibitory orders.

The campaign also demanded that children be kept away from violence, conflict, and political activities, and called for an impartial investigation into the incidents with appropriate legal action taken against those found responsible. Furthermore, CJPP appealed for psychosocial counseling, necessary protection, and other assistance to be provided to children and their families affected by the violence.

Tilotama Paudel, chairperson of the campaign, emphasized that maintaining schools, public spaces, and communities as safe and peaceful zones for children is a shared responsibility of all parties. She urged all stakeholders to prioritize the best interests of children by practicing restraint, dialogue, and peaceful methods.
