Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the phrase ‘Dimagi Naxal’ in his Independence Day speech delivered from the Red Fort. Modi explained that those with Maoist ideologies attempt to influence government policies from within institutions and urged identification of such individuals. This statement prompted political debates between the BJP and opposition leaders. Former Home Minister P. Chidambaram expressed on X (formerly Twitter), “I am proud to be a Dimagi Naxal,” and coined alternative terms like ‘Urban Naxal’ and ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ for the phrase. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that Modi’s term did not refer to opposition leaders generally, but to those who support Maoists, reject the constitution, and seek to divide the country.
