UK Pledges Continued Support to Kyiv Despite Strong Threats from Russia in Ukraine War

On his first official visit to Ukraine since being appointed British Prime Minister, leader Andy Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to maintain pressure on Russia despite Moscow’s strong threats.
Burnham met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and chaired the inaugural meeting of the Ukraine Support Coalition, established by the UK and France under the leadership of Burnham’s predecessor Sir Keir Starmer.
Praising the coalition’s efforts, he also called on the US Congress to intensify economic pressure on Russia.
The British government has agreed to transfer the blueprints of UK components used in the ‘SCALP’ missile. The ‘SCALP’ missile, manufactured in France, is comparable to Ukraine’s own ‘Storm Shadow’ missile. Once it receives the blueprint, Ukraine will be capable of producing long-range weapons domestically.
Burnham said that partners are doing “everything they can” to help Ukraine explore its own reserves for air defense and assist others in doing the same.
“This is a moment to maintain pressure on Russia, weakening their capacity to finance this illegal war,” Burnham said, praising the “strength” of the Ukrainian people.
“Ukraine has become Europe’s defender. It is not a burden to our security; rather, it is on the front line protecting Europe.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized the UK’s decision, stating the blueprint transfer has obstructed the “small progress” being made in the peace process.
Peskov told reporters on Monday that Russian forces are collecting data to locate and destroy any missile production sites.
“Britain is supporting the Ukrainian government in this war. The UK continues to regularly and systematically fuel the conflict,” he said.
Responding to this, Burnham said, “Who started the ignition? That’s the question, isn’t it?”
He added that missile interceptors, capable of destroying incoming missiles mid-air, will be a primary focus of this coalition.
Burnham reaffirmed UK support for Ukraine amid escalating Russian attacks in recent weeks. At least 16 people were killed in a shopping center strike last Friday.
Following the meeting, Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a joint statement committing the group to making air defense a “top priority” for Kyiv.
They condemned Moscow’s “large-scale and intense attacks against Ukrainian cities, critical infrastructure, and civilians,” and pledged to limit Russia’s war financing through sanctions and punitive measures against the ‘Shadow Fleet’.
The ‘Coalition of the Willing’ is an alliance of 34 countries including Ukraine.
“Leaders once again reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s independence,” the member states participating in Monday’s meeting in Kyiv or via videoconference said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the European Union has approved €610 million (approximately £520 million) in military aid to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense system.
This funding is part of the €9 billion loan package the EU has allocated to Ukraine.
The UK and Ukraine have also announced a new military technology partnership under which British experts will gain access to Kyiv’s ‘Avengers AI Labs’ database.
According to the UK Prime Minister’s office, Ukraine is using sensors and cameras to collect battlefield data.
This data may then be used to train AI models to address key national security challenges faced by both nations.
