Consumption of Extremely Hot Beverages May Increase Risk of Esophageal Cancer
A warning has been issued that consuming extremely hot beverages can increase the risk of esophageal cancer. People who regularly drink very hot tea or coffee are advised to exercise caution. A study conducted by scientists in the United Kingdom has shown that extremely hot beverages may raise the risk of esophageal cancer.
This study, conducted on approximately one million individuals, provides the largest evidence yet on the association between hot beverage consumption and esophageal cancer. Compared to those who consume tea or coffee at a “warm” temperature, individuals who drink “very hot” beverages have nearly three times the risk of developing esophageal cancer. However, experts note that despite this increased risk, the overall risk of cancer from hot beverage consumption remains relatively low compared to other factors. Drinking hot beverages with steam can damage the inner lining of the cells along the passage to the stomach.
