Donald Trump has rejected demands to slow down the development of artificial intelligence (AI), stating that the United States will not fall behind China in this arena. Leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX had called for a slowdown in AI progress and the implementation of strict safety guardrails. Concerns about existential risks from rapid technological advances have led tech leaders and Democrats to advocate for stringent oversight. This week, prominent leaders from major U.S. AI organizations, including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Elon Musk of SpaceX, urged slowing the pace of development.

However, the President indicated on Sunday that some safety guardrails might be feasible. He emphasized the importance of maintaining American international leadership in the field. Trump stated, “Look, we are ahead of China in AI. I want to keep it that way. Because whoever wins AI wins everything.” He made these remarks during a conversation with journalists while visiting the Dunbeg Golf Course in Ireland.

Democrats have criticized the Republican response and called for swift regulatory measures. Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona accused both Johnson and Trump of neglecting the risks posed by AI. He said, “We cannot move forward without carefully considering this issue. If we do, we will lose to China.”
