Krisnabhir Road Damaged by Bhote Koshi-Trishuli Floods to Reopen This Week, Challenges Remain
Officials have announced that the Krisnabhir road on the Prithvi Highway, located in ward 7 of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality, Dhading, will be operational from October 1.
Engineer Ishwar Nepal, working with the construction company on site, stated that the work to prepare a temporary road near the section that collapsed on the 11th day after commencement has been completed.
He further explained that the riverbank was cut to build a road approximately 300 meters long and 7 meters wide at the affected section.
Currently, graveling, ditch construction, and slope leveling work are ongoing on the temporary road, Nepal added.
“After completing road construction, we operated about 20 vehicles on a trial basis this Monday,” he said.
After flooding at this site, the Trishuli River eroded about 200 meters of the road within days, disrupting traffic for two weeks.
The road was originally cut off on the 14th of Bhadra (Nepali calendar).
A previous landslide in this area in 2000 BS caused long-term difficulties for travelers, and this recent road collapse adds further challenges.
Ditching and Graveling
Consultant Prabhuraj Pandey said work is ongoing to allow operation of all vehicle types from light to heavy starting October 1.
He noted plans to complete one-meter-wide ditches and gravel spreading on the road in the coming days.
Pandey also mentioned ongoing work to seal cracks on the mountainside above the road; however, he warned the risk of landslides remains if heavy rain continues.
What About Nighttime Operations?
Authorities report that efforts to restore traffic flow on both sides of the road are progressing rapidly.
“We are preparing to open the road from October 1 for all vehicle types, but regarding nighttime traffic, the Department of Roads will issue a public notice,” Consultant Pandey said.
The Prithvi Highway, a major route connecting Kathmandu to other districts, has been closed, leading drivers to use alternative routes.
It is estimated that over 10,000 government vehicles traverse this highway daily.
