Meanwhile, the CDU fell below the critical 5% threshold required to gain representation in the state parliament. Upon release of the initial results, Chancellor Merz described the outcome as a “disaster.”

“We cannot spin a positive narrative out of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern results. This is a disaster,” he said. Despite the CDU’s vigorous efforts, Merz attributed the negative outcome to polarization between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and AfD, which adversely impacted his party. In the capital Berlin, the left-wing Die Linke emerged as the frontrunner. Exit polls indicate Die Linke securing around 26% of the votes. Nevertheless, Merz acknowledged the pressures on his leadership and emphasized the need for improvements.

He stated that resolving Germany’s economic challenges and growing political divisions should not mean reverting to the “good old days.” In Berlin, Die Linke maintained its lead with 26% of the vote in another state election, followed by the CDU and the Green Party. Die Linke’s lead candidate, Elif Eralp, addressed supporters, interpreting the election outcome as a triumph of “love and justice over hatred.”
