Heavy Rainfall Likely to Cease Soon; Night Rains Pose Risks to Several Rivers

Meteorologists have indicated that the ongoing rainfall in Nepal, which began on Thursday, will come to an end starting Sunday. Meteorologist Vinod Pokharel stated that while some areas may still experience light rain by Sunday afternoon, the likelihood of heavy rainfall is “almost over.” However, Sanjiv Adhikari from the Department of Meteorology warned that the rain that fell Saturday night and Sunday morning has impacted major rivers, necessitating continued vigilance. Currently, moderate rainfall is being reported in some parts of the country.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division, the water levels of several key rivers have reached hazardous thresholds. Meteorologist Sanjiv Adhikari explained that the weather system responsible for the recent rainfall from Saturday night into Sunday morning is weakening. “The system that brought the rain last night and this morning is weakening and will be even weaker by the afternoon,” he said.

Meteorologist Vinod Pokharel, currently in the United States, also confirmed that no significant rainfall is expected going forward. “Although some locations might receive rain until Sunday afternoon, the chance of heavy rainfall is nearly ended,” he remarked. Adhikari added that conditions should improve starting Monday, with “widespread sunshine expected from tomorrow.”

According to a bulletin issued by the Department of Meteorology at 7:45 AM on Sunday, the Narayani River’s water level has risen to approximately 11 meters, exceeding the danger threshold of 9 meters and continuing to rise. This poses a high risk of flooding and inundation in floodplain areas and low-lying regions near the Narayani River in Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts. The department has urged heightened vigilance for the Kaligandaki, Seti, Madi, Marsyangdi, Daraundi, Chepe, Budhigandaki, and Trishuli rivers, along with their tributaries, through Sunday evening.
