At Least 27 Dead in Two Separate Shootings in South Africa

At least 27 people have died and 26 others have been injured in two separate shooting incidents in South Africa. In a shooting at a bar in the western area of Johannesburg on Saturday night, police reported that 17 people were killed and 15 were wounded. Among the deceased, 13 were men and four were women. According to police, approximately eight gunmen carried out the attack. They searched some of the bar’s patrons, confiscating mobile phones and fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. The incident occurred around 7:30 PM local time on Saturday. Authorities stated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Before fleeing, the suspects also set fire to two vehicles. Investigators and special police units have been deployed to apprehend those involved.

Meanwhile, in another shooting on Sunday morning at an entertainment venue in a township outside Cape Town, 10 people were killed and 11 others injured. South Africa experiences widespread use of both legal and illegal firearms. Shooting incidents are common, often stemming from conflicts between gangs and competition in informal business sectors. With a population of approximately 62 million, South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world, with an average of about 60 murders daily. In March this year, police partnered with the military to control crime in violent areas of Johannesburg. President Cyril Ramaphosa has identified rising crime as one of the country’s primary challenges.
