Diplomatic Dispute and Emerging Military Challenges Between China and Japan

The diplomatic tensions between China and Japan have intensified amid their competition to assert influence on the global stage. China has strongly condemned Japan’s increased military capabilities and defense strategy as ‘new militarism.’ Japan has outright rejected China’s accusations, positioning itself as a guardian of regional peace and security. On August 8, in Kathmandu, the rivalry between Beijing and Tokyo is no longer confined to disputed islands or ‘historical memories.’ Both nations are striving to secure the global microphone that defines each other’s international stature. This has transformed their competition into a worldwide struggle to project their voices.

The diplomatic crisis deepens as China labels Japan’s actions as ‘new militarism,’ intensifying its rhetoric. China leverages the history of World War II to garner regional and global sympathy. Japan denies these allegations as ‘false claims,’ presenting itself as a peace-loving country. Tokyo asserts it is under pressure. Beijing faces criticism for expanding its arsenal and challenging established international norms. Japan argues that the international community must express concern over these developments.

Shen Yi, Executive Director of the Center for National Security Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, stated, “China faces a deeply distorted global narrative that overshadows Japan’s fascist atrocities against China and other nations during World War II. The international reckoning for these crimes has never been fully completed.” He added, “This gap in collective memory has created fertile ground for Japan’s ‘new militarism’ to resurface.”

In May, Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue, dismissed China’s accusations of Japanese militarism as “far from the truth.” Koizumi emphasized that it is natural for countries to update their defense capabilities to meet new challenges. According to Shen, Japan has spent decades attempting to downplay global awareness of wartime atrocities while building the image of a ‘new Japan.’
