Is Drinking Coffee Appropriate During the Monsoon Season?
The increase in humidity during the monsoon season creates an environment conducive to the spread of bacteria and fungi, which can lead to a rise in stomach-related problems. With the onset of rain, cool weather, and warm coffee often become a favored combination. Many people find it hard to start their day without a cup of coffee, using it to relieve work fatigue, ward off sleepiness, or feel warmth during rainy days. However, drinking coffee during the monsoon season may increase the likelihood of stomach issues such as gas, acidity, bloating, stomach pain, indigestion, and diarrhea. This raises a natural question: does coffee exacerbate stomach problems during this period?
So, is it advisable to drink coffee during the monsoon? There is no strict prohibition against coffee consumption in this season. Healthy individuals can drink coffee in moderation. However, if someone has a sensitive stomach or has previously experienced worsened symptoms from coffee, it is advisable to reduce intake or avoid it altogether. The increased humidity and temperature during the monsoon create an environment favorable for the growth of bacteria and fungi. Additionally, contaminated food and water can raise the risk of stomach infections. Consuming fruits left uncovered, unclean water, street food, or contaminated ice can also cause stomach-related issues.
The caffeine in coffee can stimulate acid production and digestive processes in some people. This may result in symptoms such as heartburn, stomach burning, acid reflux, increased gas, or stomach discomfort for some coffee drinkers. People suffering from acidity, gastritis, stomach ulcers, or sensitive stomachs should exercise caution when consuming coffee. While coffee does not cause irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), it can act as a trigger for some individuals.
Drinking 1–2 cups of coffee per day is generally sufficient. It is important to avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach, refrain from consuming it immediately after meals, and control the quantity consumed. There is no need to completely stop drinking coffee during the monsoon. Coffee contains antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. However, if coffee consumption consistently causes stomach burning, increased gas, stomach pain, or bowel irregularities, reducing its intake is recommended.
