Lifestyle of a Massive Joint Family in Andhra Pradesh, India
In Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India, there lives an extensive joint family spanning six generations. This family requires 50 kilograms of rice daily for sustenance. On Sundays, which are special days for meat consumption, a whole sheep is needed, and 15 kilograms of flour are used to prepare pakoras. With 83 members in the family, such large quantities of food are essential.
The family resides seven kilometers from Kurlapalli Kalyanadurg. The village comprises around 400 households with a population of approximately 2,000. Upon entering the village and turning right, two large houses are visible on the road where the entire family lives. Agriculture is the family’s primary source of income. All members collectively engage in farming, livestock rearing, and milk production. The family head, Hanumanta Raidu, stated, “It is my responsibility to fulfill the daily needs of 83 members.”
Mahesh, who handles the main responsibilities of family management, explains, “While having morning tea, two members decide who will perform which tasks.” To avoid disputes, family members arrange marriages within close circles. Rajeshwari shares, “Even though occasional arguments happen, we all come together to enjoy ourselves in the evening.” The family produces grains and vegetables as needed. Mahesh adds, “We especially cultivate chili, tomatoes, melons, nuts, and almonds.”
