The head of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the removal of regulations that limit emissions from coal and gas power plants.

The agency also stated that this step is aimed at preventing future administrations from regulating emissions from power plants.

The EPA estimates that rescinding most of the climate regulations imposed during President Joe Biden’s administration will save $31 billion and decrease energy costs.

However, environmental groups warn that this move will have severe negative impacts on public health in the US as well as on the Earth’s environment. The EPA’s decision is expected to face immediate legal challenges.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated, “The reality is that the United States produces energy more cleanly and efficiently than any other country, and our power plants should not be unfairly targeted.”
