How Russia and China Are Capitalizing on the Iran Crisis
The US-Israeli conflict targeting Iran has presented Russia and China with an opportunity to undermine American interests. Both countries are providing military aid and intelligence support to Iran while closely monitoring the US military’s tactics. This has pressured the US to seek practical diplomatic solutions with Iran and revitalize its alliances. Kathmandu, April 25.
The ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran has created a significant strategic opening for Moscow and Beijing. Both view this conflict as a chance to weaken American influence in West Asia and other regions. They aim to erode US power by acquiring intelligence on American military systems and destabilizing the US-led global order. To achieve this, Russia and China are employing diplomatic, military, as well as direct and indirect methods, and so far, have seen success.
The difficulties faced by Russian forces in Ukraine illustrate how Moscow and Beijing intend to inflict damage on the US. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, the US has offered extensive support to Ukraine. The Ukraine war distracts American rivals, weakens Russian power, and imposes economic burdens on the Kremlin. This ongoing conflict diminishes Moscow’s military capabilities while providing the US with valuable insights into Russian strategies, technologies, and procedures.
In Iran’s case, Russia and China are striving to reverse the situation against the US. They believe the continuing wars in West Asia impose significant challenges on America. Over the past 20 years since September 11, the US has been mired in West Asia, whereas China has strengthened its international position. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar once remarked, “While China won without fighting for many years, the US has not succeeded despite fighting.” Moscow and Beijing now seek to exploit American misconceptions in this region.
Their goal is to entangle the US in a prolonged, low-intensity conflict that drains its resources and damages its international standing. By supporting Iran, they have the necessary leverage to accomplish these objectives. Meanwhile, Washington must abandon maximalist goals in favor of a practical middle path and work to restore its alliances.
