Congress Leader Gaurav Gogoi Defeated in Jorhat Assembly Election
In the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi was defeated in the Jorhat constituency by Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of more than 23,000 votes. According to Election Commission data, Goswami received 64,439 votes while Gogoi secured 46,257 votes.
Gogoi was presented by Congress as the chief strategist and prominent face of the campaign but was unable to retain his own stronghold. On April 21, in Kathmandu, Gaurav Gogoi, a prominent Congress leader and state president, suffered a loss in Jorhat constituency during the Assam Assembly elections. BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami emerged victorious with a margin exceeding 23,000 votes.
As a Member of Parliament representing Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, Gogoi was positioned as the main strategist and key face for Congress in this election. His failure to protect his own base is considered a significant setback for Assam Congress.
