Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi Visits China: What’s on the Agenda?
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Beijing, the capital of China, along with a diplomatic delegation. During his visit, Araghchi is set to engage in discussions with the Chinese Foreign Minister focusing on bilateral relations and the global situation. This visit comes ahead of US President Donald Trump’s scheduled trip to China, amid calls from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging China to pressure Iran.
According to Iranian news agencies Tasnim and Fars, Araghchi is expected to hold talks with the Chinese Foreign Minister. Iranian media reports indicate that the purpose of the visit is to discuss the developments in bilateral ties as well as regional and global affairs. The Associated Press notes this marks Araghchi’s first trip to China since the commencement of hostilities initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran.
China remains Iran’s most significant trading partner and a primary purchaser of Iranian oil. Despite US sanctions, China continues to buy Iranian oil. Araghchi’s visit gains particular significance as it coincides with US President Donald Trump’s planned meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14 and 15. During a press briefing on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged China to pressure Iran to relinquish control over the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the strategic importance of the visit.
