Andrew Flintoff Appointed as Head Coach of Sydney Thunder

Sydney Thunder is preparing to appoint Andrew Flintoff as their new head coach. Flintoff led the Northern Superchargers to fourth and third place finishes in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, respectively. Thunder indicated that Flintoff’s first major decision could involve the future of team captain David Warner.

The Australian Big Bash League (BBL) side Sydney Thunder is set to officially announce former coach Andrew Flintoff as their new head coach soon, according to various international media outlets. The Thunder had been searching for a new coach after parting ways with Trevor Bayliss, who completed a five-year tenure with the team.

Under Bayliss’s leadership, Thunder reached the BBL final in the 2024–25 season but finished last in both the 2023–24 and 2025–26 seasons. The 47-year-old Flintoff has spent the past year coaching the England Lions and even led them during their tour of Australia.

Flintoff also has a previous connection to the BBL, having played for Brisbane Heat in the 2014–15 season, which was the final team of his professional cricket career. Upon his appointment, Flintoff’s first significant decision may concern the future of captain David Warner, who is currently involved in legal proceedings over an allegation of driving under the influence of alcohol.
