Heat Intensifies in Sudurpashchim and Lumbini Provinces, Residents Advised to Avoid Going Outdoors

May 22, Kathmandu – The Sudurpashchim and Lumbini provinces are expected to experience increased heat in the coming days. Currently, the rising temperatures are already affecting daily life, and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Meteorological Forecasting Division has forecasted that temperatures will climb further. Accordingly, the division issued a special weather advisory this evening urging everyone to remain cautious.

Meteorologists have specifically indicated that the districts of Kanchanpur, Kailali, Doti, Bardiya, Banke, and Dang will experience higher heat levels compared to other regions. Residents in these areas have been advised to exercise special caution.

Similarly, rising temperatures have been recorded and anticipated in Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Achham, Surkhet, Salyan, Rolpa, Pyuthan, Palpa, Arghakhanchi, Rupandehi, and Kapilvastu districts. Communities in these areas are urged to stay informed about temperature conditions regularly and remain vigilant.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, since May 19, maximum temperatures have been measured at 40 degrees Celsius or above in hill and Terai regions of Sudurpashchim Province as well as some Terai areas of Lumbini Province. Additionally, several hill and Terai areas in these provinces recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius.

National temperature monitoring indicates that during the next three days, maximum temperatures in certain hill and Terai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces will remain at or above 38 degrees Celsius. Some locations may experience temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius or higher, posing a risk of extreme heat. The special advisory emphasizes the need for necessary preparations and cautions to avoid heat-related risks.

“There is a possibility of a moderate heat wave in the Terai areas and high temperatures in the hill regions of Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces over the next three days. We politely urge everyone to remain alert and take precautions against the effects of this heat,” the advisory states.

General Physician Dr. Devendra Acharya explained preventive measures against heat-related illness, noting that exposure to hot air and heat waves can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, excessive thirst, headaches, swelling of the feet, dizziness, fainting, muscle pain, and vomiting. To protect oneself, it is advised to stay in cool, shaded locations; avoid going out in the sun unless necessary; wear hats and light, covering clothing when outdoors; and regularly consume juice, soups, and plain water.

Even when taking these precautions, if someone experiences health problems, doctors recommend seeking advice from healthcare professionals promptly.
