May 20, Kathmandu – The Solomon Islands is preparing to sign a comprehensive strategic treaty with Australia while also planning to review its security agreement with China.

Solomon Islands’ new Prime Minister Matthew Wale shared these details Wednesday at a press conference in Canberra, Australia’s capital. Having become the opposition leader criticizing China only three weeks prior, Wale has now begun his official visit to Australia.

In the Pacific region, the Solomon Islands is considered China’s closest partner. Since the 2022 security pact, the US, Australia, and neighboring countries have raised concerns about China’s expanding influence.

At a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister Wale emphasized that the Solomon Islands has always been a trusted friend and partner of Australia. Despite some misunderstandings between the two nations in recent years, he expressed hope to advance their relationship through new initiatives.

Prime Minister Wale disclosed that the security agreement with China was supposed to remain confidential and that he only recently received a complete copy of the document. He explained that securing the document was a struggle and that it led to the removal of certain senior officials.

China’s Foreign Ministry has yet to comment on this issue.

Australian Prime Minister Albanese stated that Australia intends to strengthen bilateral ties by elevating their relationship to a higher level through the proposed strategic treaty, responding to the Solomon Islands’ request. Australia also announced a special aid package to help the Solomon Islands counter rising fuel costs and the effects of this year’s Cyclone “Mila.”

In 2024, Australia provided more than 10 million dollars in aid to the Solomon Islands’ police force. Analysts view Prime Minister Wale’s visit as a clear sign of improving relations with Australia.
