Putin Rejects Zelensky’s Proposal for Talks

May 6, Kathmandu – Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for dialogue. He also criticized Zelensky’s behavior. During a discussion at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday, Putin responded to Zelensky’s letter.

Zelensky had written to Putin on Thursday, urging a meeting to discuss a ceasefire. In his letter, Zelensky referenced Putin’s age, Russia’s struggling economy, and mounting military losses. He wrote, “Twenty-six years in power begin to take their toll with age. Over time, your despair will only deepen.”

Putin responded by opposing the personal remarks about his age, stating, “My age has been mentioned. Some world leaders are significantly older than me. What matters most is how proficiently you perform your duties.” Putin claimed he has never refused talks, but emphasized that proper preparation is essential. He cited last year’s agreement with then-US President Donald Trump in Alaska as a foundation for negotiations, which stipulated that Ukraine must relinquish the Donbas region.

However, Ukraine has opposed that agreement, with the letter stating, “We have heard that in Alaska you were given assurances to resolve some issues concerning Ukraine and Europe. But you must understand that decisions on Ukrainian and European matters are not made in Anchorage.”

The Kremlin has repeatedly called on Ukraine to withdraw its forces from four regions. Putin asserted that only Ukraine is interested in talks and that Kyiv’s request for dialogue is solely to halt the Russian offensive. Motivating his troops, Putin said, “Keep up the effort.”

Following these remarks, Zelensky issued a statement on Friday evening, declaring that Russia has chosen war once again. He stated, “Unfortunately, Russia has chosen war again. They do not want to end this war. This weak response will disappoint many.” Zelensky also emphasized the need to increase economic pressure on Russia. Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil refineries in efforts to damage Russia’s war finance capabilities.
