US-Iran Talks Show Promise; Trump Announces Five-Day Pause on Military Strikes
US President Donald Trump has announced that talks between the United States and Iran have been productive, leading to a decision to pause US military strikes for five days. Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social that “there have been very good and fruitful discussions regarding a comprehensive resolution to our enemies in the Middle East.”
According to Trump, all US attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure will be suspended for five days. Previously, Iran’s National Defense Council warned that any attempt to attack Iranian coasts or islands would result in mines (explosive devices) being laid across all communication lines in the Persian Gulf.
This announcement by Trump has had a positive impact on global markets. Crude oil prices have fallen by 13 percent, dropping to around $96 per barrel. Gas prices have decreased from 159 pence per therm to about 139 pence. Analysts have described Trump’s message as the most conciliatory since the launch of “Operation Epic Fury.”
Trump stated, “Based on the intent and tone of these intensive, detailed, and constructive conversations, I have directed the Department of Defense to postpone any military attacks against Iranian energy centers and infrastructure for a period of five days.”
