Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman’s Diplomatic Visits to Malaysia and China: Efforts to Establish Balanced Relations

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman will visit Malaysia from June 21 to 22 this year, followed by an official visit to China starting June 23. These visits highlight Bangladesh’s independent foreign policy and diplomatic efforts to balance its relations with both India and China. In Malaysia, Rahman will focus on the welfare of migrant workers, whereas the China visit will involve discussions on infrastructure development and new investments under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Having taken office as Bangladesh’s 11th Prime Minister in February, this is Rahman’s first foreign trip. Approximately 800,000 Bangladeshi workers are employed in Malaysia, accounting for about 37 percent of the total foreign workforce there. During his Malaysia visit, Rahman will address issues related to labor migration, recruitment costs, and legal employment. During his Beijing visit, efforts will be made to advance BRI infrastructure projects and encourage new Chinese investment initiatives.

Experts interpret these visits as reinforcing the ‘Bangladesh First’ policy. Bangladesh aims to maintain a balanced relationship with both India and China, avoiding alignment with either side exclusively. Discussions with Malaysia will focus on trade and renewable energy cooperation, while talks with China will cover the development of the ‘Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone’ in Chattogram and the modernization of the Mongla Port.

The new Bangladeshi Prime Minister has noted that the visit to India occurred at an appropriate time and indicated Bangladesh’s desire for a ‘respectful and balanced relationship’ with India. These diplomatic trips clearly demonstrate Bangladesh’s government’s strategy to pursue diverse partnerships with various countries while presenting itself as a nation committed to an independent foreign policy.
