Uruguay and Cape Verde Play to a 2-2 Draw

In a match held at the Miami Stadium in Florida, USA, Uruguay and Cape Verde ended in a 2-2 draw. This encounter was part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers taking place in the United States, where two-time world champions Uruguay faced the newcomer team Cape Verde.

Cape Verde took the lead early in the game. At the 21st minute, Kevin Pinhal scored a free-kick goal, giving his team a historic advantage. Uruguay leveled the score in the 44th minute when Maxi Araújo scored, making the first half competitive. In injury time, Agustin scored to put Uruguay ahead. However, in the 61st minute, a coordination lapse between Uruguay’s defender and goalkeeper allowed Cape Verde’s Helio Barrela to score and equalize the match once again.

After the game, Cape Verde’s coach Bubista said the team showed courage right from the start, stating, “Our team demonstrated bravery from the beginning and constantly aimed to win. This has made us very happy.” Uruguay’s coach Marcelo Bielsa remarked that as the match’s intensity dropped, the team came close to defeat.

Following this result, both Uruguay and Cape Verde have accumulated 2 points from 2 matches each in Group H. Spain leads the group with 4 points, while Saudi Arabia holds 1 point.
