Critical Clash in Toronto: Panama and Croatia Face Must-Win Match in 2026 World Cup Group L

June 23, Kathmandu – In the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L, the Central American team Panama and the experienced European side Croatia are set to clash at Toronto Stadium in Canada, each aiming to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Both teams have suffered defeats in their opening matches, making this encounter a must-win for both to advance to the knockout stage.

Croatia fought back twice against title contenders England but ultimately fell 4-2. Panama, despite excellent pressing and gameplay against Ghana, conceded a goal in the 95th minute to lose 1-0. This match will be highly strategic and decisive between Panama, seeking to earn their first World Cup points in history, and Croatia, who have reached the semifinals in the last two tournaments.

This will be the first-ever international meeting between Panama and Croatia; they have never faced each other in a World Cup or any other international competition before. Panama has yet to earn any points from their four World Cup games, while Croatia has been vulnerable in opening matches, losing four of six World Cup openers. However, Croatia has not lost two consecutive World Cup matches since 2002, so improvement is expected in this fixture.

Team News
Panama: Coach Thomas Christiansen is likely to maintain the defensive line that performed well against Ghana. Wing-back César Blackman and midfielder Carlos Harvey will be under pressure after receiving yellow cards. Although key midfielder Adalberto Carrasquillo returned to training following a groin injury that forced him out of the first match, his inclusion in the starting eleven is unlikely. Gold Cup top scorer Ismael Díaz is expected to start.
Croatia: Despite a poor start against England, 40-year-old captain Luka Modrić will remain in the starting lineup. Martin Baturina is set to continue as an attacking midfielder. Coach Zlatko Dalić has yet to decide whether to replace goal-scorer Petar Musa with experienced forwards Andrej Kramarić or Ante Budimir as the striker.
