Netherlands Coach Ronald Koeman Resigns Following FIFA World Cup Exit
Ronald Koeman, head coach of the Netherlands national football team, has resigned after the team was eliminated in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Following the defeat to Morocco in a penalty shootout, three Dutch players were subjected to racist and hateful comments on social media, prompting Koeman to step down. The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has declared it will take legal action against those abusing players and considers such behavior a criminal offense. Report dated 17 Ashadh, Kathmandu.
The match in Monterey ended 1-1 in regulation and extra time before heading to penalties, where Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Krichencio Summerville missed their attempts. Subsequently, they became targets of racial discrimination, hateful, and offensive remarks on social platforms. The 63-year-old Koeman confirmed the conclusion of his second tenure as Netherlands coach. He expressed deep disappointment on Instagram for not fulfilling his dream of making history at the World Cup. Koeman also reflected that recent years have made him realize other aspects of life are more important than football. His wife, Bartina Koeman, is currently battling breast cancer.
Amid these events, the KNVB announced plans to pursue legal proceedings against individuals responsible for racial abuse directed at players. The association labeled such comments as “extremely hateful” and stated that, upon receiving complaints, its legal team will assess whether these expressions constitute criminal offenses and, if necessary, initiate formal criminal investigations through government prosecution offices. Previously, during the Euro Cup 2021 final, England’s Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho also faced similar racial abuse, which led to imprisonment for two offenders. The KNVB reaffirmed that football is a sport that unites people from diverse communities and that any form of discrimination directly contradicts the fundamental values of the game.
