Switzerland and Algeria Face Off for the First Time in FIFA World Cup History

June 18, Kathmandu – In the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, a thrilling encounter between two diverse continental styles is set to take place tomorrow morning at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada. European powerhouse Switzerland, having topped Group B with 7 points by defeating hosts Canada and Bosnia, is in excellent form. On the other hand, the African nation Algeria qualified as one of the best third-placed teams after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Austria in their final Group J match, showcasing their potential to surprise any strong opponent.

An emotional and captivating subplot to this match is that Algeria’s current head coach, Vladimir Petković, managed the Swiss national team for seven years, from 2014 to 2021. Under his leadership, Switzerland made historic progress to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 after knocking out France. Today, Petković will be strategizing against his former players, including Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, and Breel Embolo.

Historically, Switzerland and Algeria have only met in friendly matches, with both teams having won once each. This will be their first encounter on the FIFA World Cup stage. Switzerland aims to reach the Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive time, while Algeria seeks to secure its first knockout stage victory since 2014. Swiss head coach Murat Yakin confirmed there are no new injury concerns ahead of the match. The 18-year-old sensation Johan Mambimbi, who made waves during the group stage, is expected to start alongside captain Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo, leading the attack.

“Our team is moving in the right direction. Petković knows Swiss football well, but emotions don’t play out on the field. Our goal is only the quarterfinals,” stated coach Yakin.

For Algeria, no injury problems have been reported either. The form of captain Riyad Mahrez and Amin Guiri will be crucial for the team. Although their defense shows some weaknesses, Algeria’s counterattacking prowess makes them highly dangerous. Coach Vladimir Petković said, “Switzerland feels like home to me; I have many old friends there. But today, I wear Algeria’s jersey, and we are here to make history.”
