National Fine Arts Exhibition Canceled This Year Due to Government Ordinance
June 7, Kathmandu – The ‘National Fine Arts Exhibition,’ considered a major festival in Nepal’s fine arts sector, will not be held this year. The Nepal Academy of Fine Arts has issued a notice providing information on this matter. The notice states that the posts of the academy’s chancellor and all council members remain vacant, and due to the inability to make new appointments, the decision was made not to hold the exhibition this year. The primary reason cited for this is an ordinance introduced by the newly formed government, designed to amend Nepal’s existing laws.
Because of this ordinance, all office holders of the academy were relieved of their positions as early as Baishakh (mid-April). The ‘National Fine Arts Exhibition 2083,’ slated to begin on Jestha 15 (late May), was postponed until further notice. However, with the current fiscal year drawing to a close and no new appointments made, the academy has stated that organizing the exhibition this year has become impossible. Accordingly, the academy has urged artists to retrieve their artworks. Many individuals involved in the fine arts community have expressed regret over the exhibition’s cancellation. The ordinance in question was issued by the Balendra Government on Baishakh 19, 2083 (early May, 2026).
