Former England Captain Heather Knight Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Heather Knight, the former captain of the England women’s cricket team, has announced her retirement after a 16-year international career. She led England to victory in the 2017 Women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup and became the first English cricketer to score centuries in all three formats of the game. “I am satisfied with this decision and excited for the new journey ahead,” said Knight as she concluded her international career at Lord’s Cricket Ground. The 35-year-old Knight confirmed that she will retire following the ongoing Test match against India at Lord’s. Earlier, England batter Tammy Beaumont had also announced her retirement from international cricket after the same match. Knight, who debuted internationally in 2010, represented England in 320 matches, including 15 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 145 T20 internationals.
Knight took over England’s captaincy in 2016 following Charlotte Edwards. Under her leadership, England secured the 2017 ODI World Cup title on home soil, defeating India in the final held at Lord’s. Knight captained England in 199 international matches. Her nine-year tenure ended following England’s heavy defeat in the 2025 Ashes series.
During her captaincy, England reached the finals of the 2018 T20 World Cup and the 2022 ODI World Cup but were defeated by Australia in both matches. In 2020, Knight achieved another historic milestone by becoming the first English cricketer—male or female—to score centuries in Test, ODI, and T20 International cricket.
Upon announcing her retirement, Knight expressed gratitude for her journey playing cricket for England. “For 16 years, the dressing room and the people within it have been an integral part of my life. Those memories, experiences, and people have shaped who I am today,” Knight shared. “I am content with this decision and enthusiastic about the journey ahead.” She also noted that concluding her international career at the historic Lord’s ground was very special. Post-retirement, Knight plans to continue her career in cricket through managerial roles. She has already taken up the position of general manager for the London Spirit women’s team in The Hundred tournament.
