Indian Medical Association Urged to Support Suspension Demand Against Israeli Medical Association

Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has appealed to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to back the suspension of the Israeli Medical Association (IMA) at the World Medical Association (WMA). The organization stated, “Until the Israeli Medical Association fulfills its obligations related to medical ethics and medical neutrality, it must face disciplinary action.” IDPD has requested the IMA to take a clear stand in favor of protecting healthcare services at the WMA General Assembly scheduled for October 2026.

IDPD is an affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). It highlighted that over the past two years, Gaza’s health system has suffered severe impacts, including attacks on hospitals, deaths and arrests of doctors and healthcare workers, as documented by United Nations agencies. Additionally, there have been reported obstructions to humanitarian aid and essential health services.

The organization also referenced a recent article published in The Lancet, which discusses the international call for the suspension of the Israeli Medical Association from the WMA. This includes a report by the independent people’s tribunal chaired by Justice S. Muralidhar and actions taken by the South African Medical Association. IDPD has also launched an online petition on this issue, which has garnered support from doctors, healthcare workers, and public health experts in India and other countries.
