March 24, Kathmandu — Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has claimed that the videos circulating on social media concerning cash discovered at his home during the Janajati movement could be AI-generated.

Speaking to the commission formed to investigate the crackdown during the Janajati movement, Deuba stated that he was the target of a deliberate conspiracy.

The report submitted by the commission led by Gauribahadur Karki to the government has not been publicly released. The online edition of Jan Aastha weekly has unveiled sections of the report in a series of publications.

Based on a photocopy of the report obtained with the support of Jan Aastha, Deuba stated that he maintained impartiality and did not engage in any political interference.

An edited excerpt from Deuba’s statement to the commission reads as follows:

On Bhadra 23, 2082 Bikram Sambat (September 8, 2025 Gregorian), I was at my private residence located on Basuki Marg, Budhanilkantha Ward No. 2. That evening, I also attended an event at Baluwatar to advocate for lifting the ban imposed on social media. The then Prime Minister subsequently lifted the ban; however, I did not participate in any formal meetings. On the morning of Bhadra 24, around 10 AM, protesters gathered at my residence, chanting slogans. When security personnel attempted to intervene, we were subjected to physical assault, and some Janajati youth came to our defense. We reached a safe location by around 10 PM that night.

According to a police report filed under the auspices of the ward chairperson, there was cash found at my residence, which was not a large amount. The information circulating on social media may not be accurate. No police report was formally lodged regarding this matter. This entire episode is a conspiracy, but I do not know who is behind it. The police have documented vandalism, arson, and looting at my property, but there has been no information about any subsequent action taken. I have never engaged in political interference or bias. I reject the notion that political interference influenced the police’s inadequate assessment of the incidents on the 23rd and 24th.

In a democracy, trade union rights must be respected and exercised for practical benefits. Student organizations should also be active in promoting greater causes. Political intrusion should not occur within non-political entities or institutions in the country. Those involved in vandalism, looting, and arson must face legal consequences. It is essential to carry out policy, legal, and institutional reforms that incorporate the sentiments of young people.
