March 27, Kathmandu – The government has unveiled plans to operate a ‘Blue Bus’ service to enhance the safety of women commuters.
The initiative is part of a 100-point action plan approved in the cabinet meeting held on Friday.
The action plan states, “To ensure the safe movement of women, a free Blue Bus service will be established in all seven provinces. In the first phase, at least 25 buses will be put into operation within 100 days.”
Additionally, to curb gender-based violence in public transportation, the government plans to install CCTV cameras on all vehicles and mandate an SOS button on ride-sharing applications. This feature will allow immediate notification to the police in emergencies or dangerous situations, with the implementation aimed to be completed within 30 days.
