May 26, Kathmandu – Kathmandu Metropolitan City has signed agreements with various respective sports associations to conduct cricket, badminton, and swimming competitions.
The metropolitan city reached agreements with the Bagmati Province Cricket Association to organize the ‘PL Singh T20 Cricket Cup’, with the Kathmandu District Badminton Association to host the Kathmandu Metropolitan Cup ward-level badminton competition, and with the Nepal Swimming Association to hold the Kathmandu Metropolitan Mayor Cup swimming competition.
On Wednesday at Kathmandu Plaza, the agreements were signed in the presence of Acting Chief Sunita Dangol, Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Gurung, and Social Committee Coordinator Ramkumar K.C., alongside Social Development Department Chief Samiksha Niraula, Cricket Association Secretary Prashanna Shakya, Badminton Association President Deepak Thapa, and Swimming Association President Jagatman Shrestha.
These competitions will be jointly organized under the banner of the metropolitan city.
According to the agreements, the metropolitan city will provide NPR 7.5 million for the cricket tournament, NPR 3 million for the badminton competition, and NPR 1 million for the swimming event. The respective associations are required to bear 20 percent of the costs. The cricket event is scheduled to take place by June 19, badminton by June 16, and the swimming competition on June 6 and 7.
The cricket tournament will feature players from six metropolitan cities: Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara, Bharatpur, Biratnagar, and Birgunj.
The national-level open swimming competition will see participation from national, international, and Olympian swimmers. It will be held at the international swimming pool on June 6 and 7.
The badminton tournament will be metropolitan level, with players representing all ward offices.
In a brief comment after signing the agreements, Acting Chief Dangol emphasized the collaboration aims to promote sports at the local level while nurturing athletes capable of competing nationally and internationally.
Social Committee Coordinator K.C. stated they are working closely with players and experts to enhance collaboration, coordination, and investment in sports development.
Swimming Association President Shrestha expressed that the metropolitan city’s initiative significantly supports sports advancement. Similarly, Badminton Association President Thapa affirmed that a competition the metropolitan city can take pride in will be held. Cricket Association Secretary Shakya highlighted that, with support from the metropolitan city last year, cricket coaches were trained, and he hopes investments made this year will yield results at national and international levels.
Following the agreement, discussions were held on infrastructure development, encouragement of coaches and athletes, and promotion of sports programs at the community level to foster sports growth.
The metropolitan city had decided to conduct these competitions in the executive meeting held on May 16.
