Urlabari Municipality Decides to Keep Schools Open on Sundays
Morang’s Urlabari Municipality has decided to keep schools open on Sundays starting from 1st Asar. However, on Sundays, regular academic classes will not be held; only sports, creative activities, and extracurricular programs will be conducted. Branch Chief Shaligram Kafle explained that this decision was made due to increased digital media use and its negative effects on children when schools remain closed.
The municipality’s executive meeting decided to operate both community and institutional schools within the municipal area on Sundays as well. Although formal teaching will not take place, schools will arrange extracurricular activities. The decision followed complaints about rising use of mobile phones, television, and other digital media among students during school closures, which was reportedly affecting their mental well-being. The executive meeting held on 19th Jestha resolved to open schools on Sundays starting 1st Asar.
On 22nd Chaitra 2082, the Council of Ministers had announced public holidays on both Saturdays and Sundays from the 2083 academic session onward, resulting in two days off each week. However, complaints emerged about decreased academic engagement and extracurricular activities during the extended breaks. Therefore, schools will now open on Sundays specifically to conduct extracurricular activities, explained Shaligram Kafle, head of the Education, Youth, and Sports Branch of the municipality. Although regular classes will not be held, schools will organize sports, creative projects, cultural programs, extra classes, and other co-curricular activities on Sundays, according to the municipality.
