With the World Cup set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, numerous leading players from various teams have been ruled out because of injuries incurred in club matches. These injuries, often severe, have prompted many star players to miss the competition, causing considerable concern within affected squads, especially Brazil and the Netherlands, who are grappling with the loss of crucial team members.
Javi Simons (Netherlands), Tottenham’s midfielder, ended his season in April following a Premier League match against Wolves. The 23-year-old Simons suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, necessitating surgery, which has ruled him out of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad. Rodrigo (Brazil), who was set to reunite with coach Carlo Ancelotti, sustained a serious injury in March during a match against Getafe. The Real Madrid winger tore the ACL and injured the meniscus in his right knee, resulting in his exclusion from the World Cup lineup.
Hugo Ekitike (France), expected to become France’s leading striker after Olivier Giroud’s international retirement, missed the World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon during a Champions League match against PSG. Fermín López (Spain), who enjoyed an outstanding season with Barcelona scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists, fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot during a game against Real Betis and was consequently unable to secure a spot in Spain’s World Cup squad.
